Hood said he was a moderate: "I reload guns. Hood won election to each of his four terms as state attorney general by a margin of 10 percentage points or larger. Hood was first elected state attorney general in 2003 and served in that office through the 2019 election. In the Democratic primary, Hood won the nomination over seven other candidates. Reeves defeated former state Supreme Court Chief Justice William Waller (R) in an August 27 runoff after no candidate won a majority of the vote in the Republican primary. Term limits prevented incumbent Phil Bryant (R) from seeking re-election, leaving the seat open to a newcomer.
